Thanks to AI, More Tasks Are Staying In-House

Legal department jobs are facing increasing risks from generative AI, with some General Counsels opting to keep tasks in-house rather than outsourcing them to law firms. Boutique and midsize firms, which handle repetitive work, are more vulnerable than larger “Big Law” firms. Tasks such as contract review, regulatory work, and legal research are expected to decline for law firms in the near future. Layoffs at companies like Microsoft and a tough job market for corporate counsel indicate that in-house lawyers may be more impacted by this technology than those at law firms.
