Private Client & Tax Associate (Trusts & Estates)

Our client, a premier international law firm with a globally recognized private client practice, is seeking a Trusts & Estates Associate (3-5 years) to join its Private Client & Tax team in either San Diego or San Francisco.

This is an exceptional opportunity for an attorney interested in advising high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth individuals, families, fiduciaries, family offices, and charitable organizations on sophisticated domestic and international estate planning, wealth transfer, tax, trust administration, and charitable planning matters.

The successful candidate will take on significant responsibility, manage client matters independently, and collaborate closely with partners on complex planning strategies and fiduciary advisory work.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement sophisticated estate planning strategies for high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth clients
  • Draft and administer revocable trusts, wills, powers of attorney, and related estate planning documents
  • Advise clients regarding wealth transfer, succession planning, and fiduciary matters
  • Structure charitable organizations, private foundations, and planned giving arrangements
  • Implement advanced estate planning techniques involving:
    • Grantor Retained Annuity Trusts (GRATs)
    • Intentionally Defective Grantor Trusts (IDGTs)
    • Charitable Remainder Unitrusts (CRUTs)
    • Irrevocable Life Insurance Trusts (ILITs)
    • Qualified Personal Residence Trusts (QPRTs)
  • Advise on gift, estate, and generation-skipping transfer (GST) tax planning strategies
  • Prepare and review gift and estate tax returns
  • Manage trust and estate administrations from inception through final distribution
  • Counsel trustees, executors, and other fiduciaries regarding their duties and obligations
  • Coordinate with clients, accountants, financial advisors, and other professionals to implement planning strategies
  • Participate in business development initiatives, including:
    • Writing articles and client alerts
    • Speaking at conferences and events
    • Building referral relationships with advisors and intermediaries

Qualifications

  • J.D. from an accredited law school
  • Active membership in good standing with the California Bar
  • 3-5 years of Trusts & Estates experience
  • Strong academic credentials
  • Tax LL.M. preferred but not required
  • Significant experience with:
    • Estate planning
    • Wealth transfer planning
    • Trust and estate administration
    • Fiduciary counseling
    • Gift and estate taxation
  • Experience working with high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth clients
  • Excellent drafting, analytical, and communication skills
  • Strong organizational and project management abilities
  • Ability to manage matters independently while collaborating effectively within a team

  • Advanced estate planning techniques and wealth preservation strategies
  • Charitable planning and private foundation structuring
  • Multi-generational family wealth planning
  • Complex trust administration and post-mortem planning
  • International estate planning exposure
